Every character has a correct stroke order if you draw the strokes in the wrong order, your IME is less likely to know what you're scribbling. With kanji, you additionally need to learn the proper way to write each one. I personally use the handwriting IME and my drawing tablet to write all kanji and kana. You don't really know kanji until you can write them from memory. If you are on any other operative system or device, I don't know how to do it, you figure it out. Handwriting input allows you to write kanji (and kana) with your finger on your phone, which is better than a mouse on PC. Tap and hold the spacebar to switch between input methods. Get it from the Play Store, find the settings, and add Japanese handwriting, along with whatever languages and methods you like. On Android phones, you'll have to figure out if your preferred keyboard already supports Japanese typing and handwriting, or get another one that does. I personally have a drawing tablet so I can write with a pen, but you can draw kanji (and kana) with a mouse. ![]() If you right-click on the romanji/kana toggle, you'll find an "IME pad". I think Duolingo is a great learning tool, but its approach to teaching kanji can be better.
